18.12.2017 – The image of the United States as one of the world's leading countries in science rests primarily on its higher education system. The latter is characterized by a particular interplay between autonomy and dependence and has seen significant changes over the past few years. It is worthwhile taking a closer look at higher education institutions in the U.S. - especially against the backdrop of the challenges the German higher education system currently faces.

06.12.2017 – Prof. Leišytė will provide a commentary on the project CETLFUNK which investigates how Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning support organisational learning when changing teaching and learning routines at universities in Germany and abroad funded by the BMBF's Quality Pact for Teaching. She will discuss the results of the project from higher education research perspective.

29.11.2017 – From December 5-8, 2017, Anna-Lena Rose will participate in the annual conference of the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) in Newport, Wales, UK, where she will give a talk titled "International Academic Staff Mobility: The Challenges of Attracting and Retaining Academic Talent in Central and Eastern European Countries". The trip is covered by a travel stipend of the early career researchers' section (HoFoNa) of the German Association for Higher Education Research (GfHf).

20.11.2017 – As an Alumna of the CES Visiting Scholars Program Prof. Liudvika Leisyte would like to share this announcement of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) at Harvard University. CES invites applications for its Visiting Scholars Program for 2018-2019. The program offers postdoctoral social scientists and historians the opportunity to spend up to one year at Harvard University for independent research on Europe or transatlantic relations. Successful candidates benefit from the Center's programs on Europe and Harvard University's intellectually stimulating environment, additionally, they receive shared office space at the Center and gain access to the university's extensive library resources.

20.11.2017 – The John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship was established as an endowment in 1966 by German industrialists and the Government to support postdoctoral scholars from Germany for 10 months of residential research during the academic year at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies (CES). In the 2018-2019 academic year, one Kennedy Memorial Fellowship will be granted to an EU scholar of exceptional promise, who intends to pursue an academic career in Europe.The fellowship provides a total stipend of $60,000 for a 10-month residential research stay between September and June.

09.11.2017 – Nino Kopaleishvili will be part of our team from November 2017. She is funded by the KAAD (Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst) and during her six-month stay at zhb, she will conduct her postdoctoral research project "Impact of Quality Assessment on Organizational Transformation of Universities: Reimagining university’s organizational culture" at the chair of Higher Education.
Dr. Kopaleishvili comes to us from Georgia and the purpose of her research project is to study organizational transformation of German and Georgian universities, examine similarities and differences of "archetypes", describe and compare internal quality assessment at universities and determine its impact on organizational development.

25.10.2017 – How do university project teams in emerging economies develop and transfer technologies to industry? While conditions typical to emerging economies are likely to influence the process of research commercialization, this issue is under-explored in literature. The authors address this gap through a comparative case analysis of two high impact commercialization projects at two Indian universities.

Call for papers: EGOS 2018, Sub-theme "Inclusive Organizations and Knowledge Workers Mobility"

12.10.2017 – May we please draw your attention to the 2018 EGOS (European Group of Organisation Studies) sub-theme "Inclusive Organizations and Knowledge Workers Mobility", co-organized by Prof. Liudvika Leišytė, Prof. Vilmante Kumpikaitė and Dr. Christine Teelken. The EGOS conference has about 2200 attendants and will take place in July 2018 in Tallinn, Estonia.
The deadline is January the 8th 2018 for the upload of short papers (3000 words).

14.09.2017 – Prof. Liudvika Leišytė will give an open lecture titled "Challenges of adjustment of expat knowledge workers in Central and Eastern European context" at the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania, September 22.
Under the auspices of the project, Anna-Lena Rose will present the findings of the recent study "Strategies, motivations and barriers for international mobility – lessons learnt from a study of international academic staff in Central and Eastern European countries". Within the scope of a workshop, Prof. Leišytė and Anna-Lena Rose will also present research instruments of their study of international academic staff in Central and Eastern European countries carried out in 2016, which will be adjusted for further use in the project funded by the Baltic-German University Liaison Office.

23.08.2017 – At the Annual Meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) in Boston Liudvika Leisyte will co-chair the Panel 73 "Interdisciplinarity in Universities" (together with Prof. Erin Leahey, University of Arizona).
Besides this, she will give a presentation on "Promoting interdisciplinarity in German universities" based on the first findings of the research project "Interdisciplinarity in German Universities". The project aims to understand the antecedents of the rise of interdisciplinarity in and its effect on German universities.

22.08.2017 – The paper by Nadine Zeeman and Prof. Liudvika Leisyte "Interdisciplinary research in German universities" will be presented by Nadine Zeeman at the Conference of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER) 2017 in Finland on August 28.
Anna-Lena Rose will present a poster on the topic "The emergence of interdisciplinary structures in academic project settings – A case study of inclusive teacher training at a German university" at CHER 2017.

10.07.2017 – Prof. Angela Brew (Macquarie University, Australia) gave a very interesting talk on "Academic artisans in the research university" at the Higher Education Research Colloquium Series. Prof. Brew explained the characteristics of academic artisans – academics, who are neither research high flyers nor award-winning teachers – and their work and discussed their relevance in contributing to the effective functioning of universities.

05.07.2017 – The paper of Julia Mergner and Prof. Liudvika Leisyte "The widening participation agenda in German higher education: Discourses and legitimizing strategies" will be presented at the EGOS Colloquium "The Good Organisation" in Copenhagen, July 8, 2017. Julia Mergner is PhD candidate at the Professorship of Higher Education. The paper is related to Ms Mergner’s PhD project "Organisational change as a response to higher education policies: The case of the widening participation agenda".

 

We welcome our new staff member Dr. Mehwish Waheed

Dr. Mehwish Waheed

29.06.2017 – Mehwish Waheed will be part of our team from July 2017 to June 2019. She is funded by the Georg Forster Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. During her stay at the zhb, she will conduct her postdoctoral research project "European students' perspective on learning from digital learning environment: the potential role of knowledge quality, interactive quality and virtual competence" at the chair of Higher Education. Previously, Dr. Waheed has lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she gained her PhD and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Asia-Europe Institute of the University of Malaysia. In addition, during her time in Malaysia she worked as a Manager for Research & Development at Global Illuminators (an international network for scholars from multidisciplinary fields). She is a well internationally published young scholar who is highly interested in the issues of quality and digital learning environments in Europe.

Project "Interdisciplinarity in German Universities" starts in April, 2017

03.04.2017 – "Interdisciplinarity in German Universities" is funded by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR). Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Liudvika Leisyte the project aims to understand the antecedents of the rise of interdisciplinarity in and its effect on German universities. The project uses a mixed method approach and will carry out case studies of German universities. The study will provide policy recommendations for German universities which will identify the structures and policies that could further promote interdisciplinary collaboration within and between these universities.

03.04.2017 – Nadine Zeeman, research assistant coming from the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS) at the University of Twente. She will work on the project "Interdisciplinarity in German Universities". Her main research interests in higher education studies are related to policy analysis, research governance and management, transparency tools and the relationships between universities and society.
