13.11.2015 – At 4S 40th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, Liudvika Leisyte und Lisa Sigl will chair the open panel 59 "Redrawing of boundaries and knowledge flows between industry and academia" (together with Daniel Lee Kleinman, University of Wisconsin--Madison, Department of Community and Environmental Sociology). In their presentation "Research commercialization in Germany – a story of symbolic compliance?" they will discuss findings of the research project "University-industry collaboration in high-tech fields in the U.S. and Europe".

We will again welcome some internationally renowned colleagues to discuss their work with us. The research colloquium series will start with Dr. Alex Masardo (University of Bath) at December 8. Dr. Marsardo will talk about "Changing patterns in vocational entry qualifications, student support and outcomes in undergraduate degree programmes".

17.09.2015 – Back to School at What Cost? Comparing Higher Education Models in the US and Europe". Prof. Leisyte discussed with Dr. John Weidman (Professor of Higher and International Development Education, School of Education, University of Pittsburgh), Dr. John Douglass (Senior Research Fellow in Public Policy and Higher Education at the University of California at Berkeley), and Goldie Blumenstyk (Senior Writer at The Chronicle of Higher Education). The round table discussion was moderated by Ron Linden, Director of the European Studies Center.

02.09.2015 – Prof. Cropley will explore different understandings of creativity in different fields (e.g. art, engineering). He argues that for fields like engineering we need a technology-oriented aesthetics of creativity. Such an aesthetic will be characterised by newness; but that it needs to encompasses relevance, usefulness, elegance and genesis.

28.08.2015 – At Earli 16th Biennial Conference (European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction) Prof. Leisyte will present "Boundary work of bioengineers: Inside the world of academic entrepreneurs" on August 28 at Cyprus. The presentation is part of session J 17: The reflexive academic: negotiating, mediating, balancing teaching and research in academic careers.

08.08.2015 – At the Academy of Management Annual Meeting (AOM) Prof. Leisyte will present the first findings of the current study of academic entrepreneurship in Germany on August 7-11 in Vancouver, Canada.
Her presentation will be given at the Professional Development Workshop "Rethinking Universities as Entrepreneurial Hubs".
While at AOM she will also attend the conference on Teaching and Learning.

08.07.2015 – In her talk Dr. Sigl will discuss how young scientists deal with the problem of epistemic and social uncertainties at times of neoliberal reorganization of academic institutions. Using the academic life sciences in Austria as a case example she will describe empirically different modes of coping with these uncertainties deployed by researchers and how these strategies shape cultures of research and knowledge production.

18.06.2015 – The managerial reforms in the German higher education system in recent decades mark an altered relationship between research organizations and professors as the main performers of research and teaching, as the latter are increasingly held accountable for their performance and expected to adjust themselves to the new evaluation criteria. In this talk the authors present the results of a recent study which focuses in particular on the impact of the changing quality management on the professional identity of university professors.

In particular, she will focus on the teaching excellence initiatives and critically assess the rewards for both teaching and research excellence. From this background she will address the questions how teaching excellence should be assessed, and how, if at all, it should play into league tables and rankings.

09.04.2015 – Dr. Bengü Hosch-Dayican and Prof. Liudvika Leisyte will present the working paper "Soziale Bewegungen von Akademikern: Neue Akteure im System der Hochschulsteuerung" (Social Movements of Academics as New Actors in Higher Education Governance) at the 10th Annual Meeting of the German Higher Education Research Association (GfHf). The conference takes place in Kassel, Germany, on April 8-10 and is organized by the International Centre for Higher Education Research-Kassel (INCHER).

16.02.2015 – The special track in the 4S annual meeting (Society for Social Studies of Science) no. 59 is on "Redrawing of boundaries between industry and academia" and aims to bring together scholars from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Higher Education Studies (HES).
The deadline for the proposals is March 29, 2015.

28.01.2015 – Prof. Liudvika Leisyte will give an invited talk at the 1st Conference of the Central European Higher Education Cooperation (CEHEC). Her talk focuses on the Transformation of University Governance in Central and Eastern Europe: its Antecedents and Consequence. This conference is the first of a series of annual conferences organized by the Center of International Higher Education Studies (CIHES) at the Corvinus University of Budapest and the Central European University (CEU) in collaboration with partners from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia as part of the Central European Higher Education Cooperation (CEHEC) project. The theme of the conference is "Main challenges to universities in Central and Eastern Europe".

He addresses the question whether a new profile of boundary crossing researchers is emerging due to changing disciplinary identities, and to what extent this trend might get established in the academia.

In particular, he will address the topics of publication language, citation analysis as well as the use of bibliometric indicators such as journal impact factors.
