Placement Tests in German as a Foreign Language

In some cases it is necessary to take a placement test before enrolling in German language courses.  Use the guidelines below to find out which situation is applicable to you and take the next steps. 

NO placement test

You want to enroll in German A1.1 or A1.  

-> You do not have to take the placement test.  

-> You can enroll directly using our online course registration system (“Kursplattform”) starting March 27, 2020.

NO placement test

You want to enroll in German A1.2, A2, B1 or B2 and …

… you have already successfully completed the previous course level at the TU Department of Foreign Languages.  

-> You do not have to take the placement test.  

-> You are already authorized to enroll in the next level course.

-> You can enroll directly using our online course registration system (“Kursplattform”) starting March 27, 2020.

NO placement test

You want to enroll in German A1.2, A2, B1 or B2 and …

… you have an A1, A2 or B1 Goethe Institut certificate.  The certificate must not be older than 12 months.  You must have passed the German course with a grade of at least “satisfactory / befriedigend” (result over 69%).

NO placement test

You want to enroll in German B2 or C1 and …

… you have enrolled at TU Dortmund using your DSH, TestDaF, or Telc-C1-Hochschule certificate.

-> You do not have to take the placement test.

Individual placement

You want to enroll in German B2 or C1 and …

… you already know German at the B2 level or higher (for instance from previous university studies) but you have no proof of an actual course level.

Placement test  

You want to enroll in German A1.2, A2, B1 or B2 and …

… you do not have a Goethe Institut certificate  

… your Goethe Institut certificate is more than 12 months old

… you passed the Goethe Institut German course with a grade below “satisfactory / befriedigend” (result below 70%).
